Why would anyone want to consume their own placenta? It’s not supported by mainstream medical practitioners (possibly because pharmaceutical companies can’t sell or synthesize it as a product) and as a consequence, there’s little in terms of documented studies that determine the effects of postpartum placenta consumption.
In fact, the research (or lack thereof) is well defined in this “are there benefits to be gained from placenta consumption” article from Science & Sensibility and although triggered as a reaction to the celebrity interest in placentophagy, it points to a rather disappointing lack of answers.
So why did we take a look at placenta encapsulation in the first place? It’s all about the benefits for mother and baby.
The key benefits that are often cited by advocates include:
- improved lactation
- increased energy
- reduced postpartum bleeding
- decreases the chances of postpartum depression
Sounds great, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want to at least give this a try if they had the opportunity to reap any of the aforementioned benefits? I think it’s utterly fascinating and being of inquiring mind and partnered with an open-minded wife, we felt that there was nothing to lose and potentially a lot to gain.
Humans are one of the few mammals who don’t consume their placenta post-birth. Perhaps plating it up flash fried with a side of dauphinoise potatoes & cauliflower cheese isn’t the most appealing meal after labour, which is why we decided to give placenta encapsulation a whirl.
This involves preparing and drying out the placenta, turning it into a powder and popping it into capsules for the radiant new mother to consume two tablets, three times each day for two weeks. The remaining tablets can then be frozen for use during menopause.
I documented the process because I thought it was
a) pretty cool
b) something I got to do all on my own purely for the benefit of Tiny Wife & the little fella (aka Rafe)
If anyone has any questions or thoughts on placenta encapsulation please let me know. I’ll document the results from this over the coming weeks to see if we can discern if any of the purported benefits manifest themselves.
